Hitting the road in your Recreational Vehicle (RV) is a great experience, but many of us are keen to take at least a few of our ‘home comforts’ with us. The toilet is one that many cannot do without, and the portable RV toilet fits the bill beautifully. There is definitely something to be said for being able to stop and take that comfort break as and when you need to, and feel like you are still in touch with civilisation.
There are many companies producing portable RV toilets including some of the major manufacturers like Thetford and Sealand. The quality of the RV toilets they manufacture are second to none and the design makes using and maintaining them extremely simple.
Just like any other toilet the RV toilet requires water for its operation. All recreational vehicles are equipped with a water tank for dishwashing, showering and for toilet flushing. Many campgrounds will provide a hook-up to your vehicle to allow constant running water to your RV.
Clogging
Due to the relatively basic nature of RV toilets, clogging can be a problem. If they are not used exactly as intended, clogging can become a regular occurrence. The main cause of clogging is toilet paper, but this can be minimised by keeping the toilet bowl at least half full of water. Remember to start the water running before opening the flush valve. This allows for the waste to pass smoothly to the RV toilet tank.
RV Toilet Paper
Although there is no real need to use special toilet paper, it is available, and can help to alleviate the clogging problem. It works by breaking down into very small pieces then it hits the water. Some RV dealerships sell it, but it’s easier just to buy some online. If you don’t want to buy some, just use a standard toilet paper, a single ply if possible gives the best results.
RV Toilet Tank – How to Empty One
One of the great design features of the RV is the ease of which the toilet can be emptied. The RV toilet uses gravity to aid in waste removal, and your RV will be equiped with a special hose which, when fitted to the RV toilets tank and to the dumping station, will remove the waste products with ease. No unpleasant work involved here. The process is quick and hygienic.
Odour Eliminators
When you flush your RV toilet, the waste is transferred to a holding tank, these typically having a holding capacity of around 40 – 50 gallons. These can become rather wiffy when full, but you can buy RV odour eliminators online which will ease the situation. Well worth the investment.
If you enjoy travel in your RV and want to make the whole experience just that little more comfortable, consider purchasing an RV Toilet. You won’t regret it.
